Smt. Rekha Sharma

Mrs. Rekha Sharma is an alumina of prestigious DAV College, Dehradun (Uttarakhand). A graduate in Political Science, History and English Literature with a Diploma in Marketing and Advertising, Fashion Designing and Higher Diploma in Computers System Management.

Married to an Army Officer, she has proactively taken part in various family welfare activities within the Army to promote better standards of living and education to the wives and children of the soldiers in order to make them self-reliant and bold to brave the day to day rigors and challenges of the Army life.

She has been an erstwhile Member of District Consumer & Redressal Forum with the Govt. of Haryana.

Running her own event management center by the name of 'Chavi' she has organized various engrossing seminars and debates, talk shows and seminars on meaningful social relevant events affecting women at large

Mrs. Rekha Sharma was nominated as Member, National Commission for Women, in August 2015. She has also been given the additional charge of Chairperson, National Commission for Women since 29.09.2017. Since her joining the Commission she has been instrumental in preserving the interests of those women who have no voice in the society. She has visited almost all the States and met women in need of all walks of life.

She has conducted around 40 inquiries, worked extensively for women workers of closed tea gardens, taken up police reform in a big way.

The issues related to female prisoners are close to her heart. She has actively advocated for improving the condition of the women prisoners, specially the under trails lodged in various jails across the country. In her endeavour to bring about jail reforms, she has visited various Jails throughout the country and made valuable recommendations.

She has also taken suo moto cognizance of crime committed against women throughout the country and initiated over 25 inquiries in serious cases. Committed to the welfare of every woman, she visited many Jails and Mahila Ashrams of States and interacted with the inmates there. She has also taken keen interest in championing the cause of vulnerable section of women, mainly in Red Light Areas.

She has made multiple surprise visits to the alleged red light areas to get an insight into the problems faced by these women. She has also been an integral part of many Commission programs such as Mahila Jan Sunwais where she has chaired the Jan Sunwais. During the course of various Mahila Jan Sunwais over 1000 complaints in the Commission have been heard and disposed of by her.

On attaining the charge of the Chairperson, NCW, Mrs. Sharma has not only addressed the domestic and national issues, but also meticulously taken up the concerns of the Indian women deserted by their NRI husbands living abroad, including issues relate to child custody.

Being a youth oriented member, she has visited many Schools, Colleges and Universities and is also one of the most social media savvy members of the Commission. This trait has made her very approachable to the complainants.

Visits which have been very special for her include visit to glass factories of Firozabad and tea garden of North-East India wherein the situation of the women prompted her to send an elaborate Report to the PMO and Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.

Mrs. Sharma looks forward to doing even more meaningful during her remaining tenure with the Commission. She remains firmly committed to fight for the rights of women not only in India but anywhere in the World.
